In 2011, I moved from San Diego to Austin after being homeless, living on couches, and eating on less than a dollar a day. I thought the ridiculous amount of cystic acne and rosacea on my face was due to stress and the issues I was having being able to eat. After moving to Austin, and getting back on my feet, my face had cleared up, cementing my belief that the issues on my face were solely a result of my life situation. I went in search of an aesthetician who could help complete my recovery. Wendy is the angel who resolves our skin woes at Beau Petit Ange. I went to her for about a year for a series of facials, microdermabrasion, and a daily protocol using organic face cleansers, toners, and sunscreens to heal my skin of the extreme scarring I had. After this year, my skin was healthy, healing and looked fabulous! However, it turns out this fabulousness was temporary.
I went home for one of my many "homesick and can't stand it" visits, and did what I usually did: enjoyed every single one of my not-so-good-for-you-but-absolutely-delicious foods. We're talking bagel with a mega amount of cream cheese, pizza, cheesesteak and, of course, Carvel ice cream! I woke up the following morning (yes I had this all in one day) and my face was covered from forehead to chest with cystic acne and rosacea. The breakout was devastating but signaled without a doubt that I had developed some sort of sensitivity. After a 3-week elimination diet, I discovered it was a dairy allergy. Thankfully, while the diagnosis sucked, the result of my overindulgence was slowly dissipating.
After beginning aromatherapy classes, I was now able to prepare blends that would support and promote my body's ability to heal such visible damage as what was on my face. Now while I may call this a "miracle," in reality this is not as much a "miracle" as it is simple science. A friend of mine shared a recipe for her face oil with me. She mentioned that she had used this exclusively as an oil for her face for years. She has porcelain skin! Despite having a history of troubled skin, you wouldn't be able to tell at first glance. It was enough for me to at least try it. The original recipe uses olive oil as the base oil, however, I have a t-zone, coupled with oily, sensitive skin spots. This does not bode well for using olive oil. It's too heavy of an oil for sensitive, partially oily skin like mine.
The first step is creating a starter base, which you top with an oil of your choice. The recipe for the starter is as follows:
I add frankincense and grapefruit essential oils to my oil and use a combination of rosehip and camelia base oil. Camelia is an excellent base oil for those of us with sensitive skin. It is light, not greasy, and absorbs easily without clogging our pours. The gist of this and any other natural product is to feed our bodies wholesome, clean, unrefined substances from the outside in. This recipe allows me to do just that. My face LOVES it!!
There are a few oils specifically which aide our skin in regeneration, reduction of scars and softening of wrinkles. When I first included rosehips I had no clue what the results would be, but I was game to try it. Rosehips is known as one of the best oils to choose for your skin. You can use it on your eyelids as an eye cream, or even on your lips as a moisturizer. There's no reaction! Seriously, no burning whatsoever!
My next find was a recipe for rosewater and lavender water as a toner. I dilute a 50/50 blend of rosewater and lavender water into a separate bottle. This recipe is just a blend including 1/4 part lavender water, 1/4 part rosewater, and 1/2 part distilled water. It feels amazing!
Now before you go running off to snag the oils from our store, let's talk safe use of essential oils. They can be very toxic if you don't know what you are doing, or if you use too much. This is most definitely an instance where too much is really too much! A little goes a long way, as you see above only about a dime size oil on my face twice daily elicited great results!
Essential oils and aromatherapy are meant to assist in a healthy holistic lifestyle. I eat holistically 80% of the time. What that means is organic produce, grass-fed beef, free range chickens, wild caught fish/shellfish and I rarely eat anything grain which isn't organically grown. Eating unprocessed (aka holistic) helps our bodies regenerate new cells, and will help our organs and internal systems operate efficiently. Basically, we provide the fuel our bodies need to work like a well-oiled machine!
Here are some facts about each of the add-on oils I chose for the ingredients mentioned above:
Rose hips oil contains 50% more vitamin C than an orange. has astringent qualities, as well as the ability to ignite the regeneration of new skin cells. This makes it an ideal treatment for scars, acne, and burns. The astringent found within Rosehips Oil helps to rehydrate your skin, not dry it out. It contains a great deal of Vitamin A as well as antioxidants, carotenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, leucoanthocyanins, and catechins.
Essentially what this all means is it can assist in preventing cancer cell regeneration; and cardiovascular disease. In other words: Along with a healthy lifestyle, Rose Hips Oil can softening wrinkles, healing acne and other scars in our dermis, and protects our skin from bacteria and viruses.
Frankincense holds properties which act as an antiseptic, disinfectant, astringent, carminative, cicatrizant, cytophylactic, digestive, diuretic, emenagogue, expectorant, sedative, tonic, uterine, vulnerary substance. Frankincense has been known to lift skin, contract muscles, and blood vessels. Giving way for younger, fresher skin, regardless of your age. Frankincense is one of the more popular top essential oils for assisting our healthy lifestyles in keeping us young, not only in our hearts but all over our bodies. Eliminating gas, promoting skin regeneration, and preventing infections.
Grapefruit is in the citrus family. Citrus is known for its disinfectant and diuretic properties. Additionally, grapefruit is a "happy food" - aiding our mental and emotional health as an antidepressant and stimulant for mood enhancing. It truly can turn our mood from blah to happy in a few bites (or sniffs if you are using the essential oil). The antiseptic properties help prevent and protect our skin against microbial infections, as we experience with acne. Grapefruit can be applied to cuts and bruises, although open cuts may sting a bit when this is applied. A drop or two combined in a base oil makes an excellent skin oil. Hence my adding it to Rose Hips Oil.
While all of this information sounds wonderfully healing, we need to be aware of some safety precautions as well. First and foremost, each of these recipes is designed for external use only. Grapefruit is photosensitive, which means when you include it you are more susceptible to burning, and skin damage due to sun exposure. Therefore you really want to be aware of what you are using, and if you include citrus be strict about using sunblock or using another sun protection method you choose on your face or any other part of your body where you apply this oil regularly.
